Geographical and discursive variation of discourse-connective que in Spanish

This study presents a corpus-based analysis of discourse-connective que (DCQ) in five varieties Spanish and across four different discursive genres. On the one hand, we show that DCQ is not only spoken phenomenon but at same time mainly restricted to colloquial language use. other results more entrenched Peninsular variety than Latin-American (Mexico shows lowest overall frequency). Moreover, also analyze geographical variation regarding position which located turn speaker (heading or not), distinguishing between three profiles associated with specific regions: i) Spain, where mostly found initial position, ii) Argentina, Caribbean Mexico, primarily used non-initial iii) Chile, almost equally distributed positions. Finally, attested differences type occurs (initiation, preferred response dispreferred response) internal structure (utterance complex vs extension, for multiturn units).
